How do you know if your app idea is actually worth building?
A first-time app builder asked the community for practical advice on validating an idea before writing code. They had heard the advice to talk to potential users and do research first, but could not figure out what that actually looks like day-to-day. The question boils down to: what do you do between having the idea and starting to build — or is it fine to just build and see what happens?
Key points
- Talk to 5–10 potential users about the problem they face before building anything — ask about their pain, not your idea
- A simple or mock-up can test interest without writing real code
- Building the smallest possible version first (MVP) lets you get real cheaply and early
- 'Build first, see what happens' can work, but risks wasting weeks on something nobody wants
